A Jammu resident who lost her son in a road accident 17 years ago

A Jammu resident who lost her son in a road accident 17 years ago, on April 5, finds image of his son in a city boy with deformed limbs who shares his date of his birth with death anniversary

When octogenarian Nimita (name changed on request), who always believed in destiny, met 17-year-old Nadeem Sheikh, she thought it was more than a coincidence. Seventeen years after her son died soon after amputation of legs following a road accident, Nimita was face to face with a teenager with deformed lower limbs in whom she saw image of her lost son.

And she had reasons to believe so.  Mohd Nadeem Sheikh was going to turn 17, on April  5, the date on which her son had passed away. Besides she found a similarity between her son’s amputated legs and Nadeem’s deformed lower limbs.

Destiny’s designs
Nimita, a resident of Jammu, was visiting her relatives in Ahmedabad last month. A news report in Ahmedabad Mirror which had a detailed account of Nadeem’s aspirations, against all odds, caught her attention. Son of a milk vendor, Nadeem had excelled in his studies and was appearing in class 10 board examination. The report also mentioned that the young boy, aspired to be a surgeon and treat children born with complications similar to his.

“When I read about Nadeem, I had a strong urge to meet him as he reminded me of my son. After meeting him, when I came to know about his date of birth, I had little doubts that destiny had given me a chance to meet my son,” said Nimita, who traced Nadeem with the help of this correspondent.

On her first meeting, Nimita handed over a cheque for Rs 1,500 to Nadeem and also assured his parents that she would continue to send him money every month so that he could meet the expenses for his education.

Nimita, who has been into charity and social work for last several years, was initially not willing that Mirror should report about her desire to support Nadeem. After much persuasion, she agreed but only after taking the promise that her identity would be protected.

“I always knew that with my hard work I will be able to become a successful doctor. And now I have another family member whose motivation and support is going to help me attain my goal,” said Nadeem

Mother’s hope

Nadeem’s father Sheikh, a milk vendor who doubles up as auto driver, to make ends meet has no words to express his gratitude.

“When Nadeem was young, people used to make fun of him for his complications. For us he was always a special child and he proved his abilities by taking active part in sports as well as in other activities. But people like her (Nimita) have now restored our faith in humanity. With her blessings, we are sure Nadeem would achieve his dream of becoming a leading surgeon,” Sheikh said.

Nimita, too has high hopes of her ‘newly-found son’. Set to leave for her native place Jammu in a few days, she has already exchanged phone number and address of Nadeem for regular correspondence.

“I have severe pain in my legs and can’t walk properly. I am just waiting for you to grow up and become a doctor, so that you can treat me,” she tells him while wishing him a long life, on the eve of Nadeem’s birthday which coincides with her son’s death anniversary.

Mumbai Indians win the Match

Is it the tide of change? That will be the question as defending champions CSK suffer rare home defeat

NEW KINGS Mumbai Indians’ captain Harbhajan Singh (2nd R) jumps to celebrate with teammates the dismissal of Chennai Super Kings’ Ravichandran Ashwin during their IPL match in Chennai on Wednesday
It will be wrong to judge the final outcome of the fifth edition of Indian Premier League from just one match. That too the opening match.  But questions will be raised — including the now oft-repeated question — has Midas touch deserted Mahendra Singh Dhoni?

With Super Kings tottering at five for 85 in the 13th over, the crowd sang the famous Rajinikanth song — ‘singam onru porapattudey’ (A tiger has begin it’s journey) followed by a shrilling adulation. At M A Chidambaram Stadium, Dhoni is the Super Kings.

King did not last
However, the king did not last — precisely six balls that yielded just four runs. But that was the Chennai story in the opening match. At ‘home’, Suresh Raina was at his best — rather trying to be — with a 26-ball 36. But that included just two fours and a six.

The struggle was imminent. M Vijay has had a patchy domestic season and he looked out of touch as well. S Badrinath too has had a poor season and he continued with that. The import stars looked at sea.

But the biggest disappointment was the one who is struggling to live up to his newfound fame — Ravindra Jadeja. The justification for his $2m tag is yet to come after CSK managed just 112 in their own citadel that remained unconquered last season.

Points to prove
Cut to Mumbai Indians. They are the side that reflect their captain well. Like Harbhajan Singh, they too have some points to prove. He went wicketless, but Pragyan Ojha justified his own move and Lasith Malinga once again showed why he is so dangerous while Kieron Pollard too chipped in.

Abu Ahmed was expensive, but compensated that with a beauty that found Dhoni short of his crease.

Later on, Richard Levi gave India the first hand experience of his Leviathan aura with a 35-ball 50 that sets the tone while chasing. Though Rohit Sharma failed and Sachin Tendulkar got injured, Mumbai strolled past the target.

Brief Scores: Chennai Super Kings 112 in 19.5 overs (S Raina 36; K Pollard 2/15, L Malinga 2/16, P Ojha 2/17) lost to Mumbai Indians 115/2 in 10.4 overs  (R Levi 50, J Franklin 25; D Bravo 1/14, D Bollinger 1/34)

little Pari, Shahida meet for DNA test

Mumbai resident who claims to be the abandoned baby’s mother submitted her ration card, her child’s birth certificate and photographs to RPF cops. She, however, did not have a photo ID proof. DNA test results expected in four-five days

The ordeal is not over yet for little Pari who was found abandoned in a train on Wednesday. Saiyed Kaneez Zaira alias Shahida, the Mumbai woman who claimed the baby is her daughter Rukaiya, reached Ahmedabad on Saturday morning. She carried with her some documents to support her claim.

However, she did not have a photo identity proof. Desperate to get her baby back, it was Shahida who told cops she was willing to take a DNA test. Around 2.40 pm, blood samples of Shahida and Pari were collected at Civil Hospital and sent to FSL Gandhinagar for DNA profiling. The report is expected in four-five days.
SUCH A LONG JOURNEY

Shahida, who arrived in the city in a Volvo bus, got down near V S Hospital around 7.45 am. She was accompanied by social worker Hasan Master and his niece Raees Fatima. The trio went to an acquaintance’s house first and then around 9.45 am reached Mahipatram Rupram Ashram where Pari is being taken care of.

On Friday, Shahida had told mediapersons that her estranged husband Mohammed Yasin had abducted their three-month-old daughter on March 1 and was missing since.
CAN I SEE HER, PLEASE?’

The orphanage authorities verified the photographs, ration card and baby’s birth certificate, Shahida had got along with her.

She requested them to show her the baby. But the staff refused to entertain her plea. A teary-eyed Shahida began pleading and fainted in the office of the ashram. Then, on humanitarian grounds, the staff decided to allow her to meet the baby for two minutes.

Shahida was taken to the baby’s room on the first floor. On seeing Pari, she began crying inconsolably. She lifted the baby and kissed her before putting her back in her crib.

Constables of Railway Protection Force (RPF), who were present in the orphanage, later brought her to their Kalupur office.

For three hours, RPF DySP H K Chauhan and Inspector P P Pizoria questioned Shahida who told them she had been staying with her father, three brothers and sister for two years. Her mother had passed away when she was young.

‘HE DID NOT LIKE THE GIRL’

Shahida, who has studied till class 10, got married to Yasin in 2008. She told the cops that two years after their marriage, Yasin’s parents disowned him. So, they moved to a rented house.

However, since he used to beat her up often, she suffered a miscarriage. Fed up with his drinking habits and abusive nature, she decided to move to her father’s house in Govandi.

The couple patched up later, but he did not change his ways. Yasin, who was employed as a driver, used to come and stay with her for a couple of days every month. She told cops that Yasin suspected her character and hated the fact that their first baby was a girl.

‘NO PHOTO ID PROOF’

Shahida and Pari were taken to Civil Hospital for collection of blood samples. Later the cops took them to forensic lab in Gandhinagar to complete certain formalities.

Civil Hospital’s medical superintendent M M Prabhakar said, “Our chief medical officer collected the blood samples of the woman and the baby. These were then sent to FSL after necessary procedures.”
‘FSL REPORT SOON’
“We have verified her documents, but she does not have a photo identity proof. However, it was she who suggested we conduct a DNA test ,” said PP Pizoria, inspector, RPF.

Around 6.30 pm, RPF dropped Shahida and the baby back at Mahipatram Rupram Ashram. She then left the place along with Master and Fatima .

“Pari is my daughter Rukaiya. I cannot tell you how happy I am to see her. I am leaving for Mumbai tonight to get more documents. I will return after the cops receive the FSL report. I am told it will take nearly five days,” said Shahida.

She added, “Allah is great. I am sure I will get her custody soon. I will do all it takes to ensure she grows up to be a fiercely independent woman.”

HOW IS DNA TEST CONDUCTED?A person’s DNA profile is made up of a number of genetic markers, which are specific sequences of DNA at particular locations that scientists have determined to be useful as identifying marks for individuals. Every person has two copies of these markers; one set is inherited from the mother, and the other set is inherited from the father. In our cells, DNA is found either in the nucleus (nuclear DNA) or in the mitochondria (mitochondrial DNA). Mitochondrial DNA is inherited solely from the mother. Every child (male or female) has an exact copy of his/her mother’s mitochondrial DNA. Proving a relationship based on comparison of the mitochondrial genome (order of genes) is much easier than that based on the nuclear genome, which involves detecting specific sequences in DNA. If the tested parent and child are biologically related, their profiles will have at least a 50 per cent similarity. If an alleged parent’s profile shows three or more DNA markers that do not match the child’s markers, then that person is excluded as the biological parent of the child.

Saif-Kareena set a last week of January 2013

With Agent Vinod out and Kareena’s films scheduled to wrap up by December, the couple prepare to wed in the last week of Jan

The most eagerly awaited Bollywood event in recent times has surely been the big Pataudi-Kapoor wedding. The question had never been 'will they or won't they' but rather 'When will Kareena Kapoor and Saif Ali Khan tie the knot?' And though both the actors have remained tight lipped, speculations have refused to die down. While many predicted a 2012 wedding, soon after the release of Agent Vinod, Mumbai Mirror has learnt that the couple will finally get married early next year.

A source close to the couple told Mirror, "Saif and Kareena have decided to tie the knot early next year. It would either be January 2013 or early February. The venue and the functions are to be finalised."

In fact, the couple has decided to hold the wedding as soon as they finish shooting for their current projects. Kareena, who starts work on Sanjay Leela Bhansali's film with Ranveer Singh on July 21, will get free by the end of this year. The details of the grand shaadi will be worked out then.

Earlier this year, Saif had said, "Marriage is a question that I won't answer until I am done with the release of Agent Vinod." It seems, he is still not in the mood to talk. He chose not to revert when asked. Kareena too was evasive. Guess a big announcement is on its way…

NEW DELHI: The CBI has issued a "look out notice" to prevent NRI businessman Ravi Rishi, owner of Britain-based Vectra group, from leaving the country, a CBI official said on Sunday.

The Central Bureau of Investigation has alerted all airports and border check points about Rishi, the official told IANS.

Vectra group has been accused of alleged irregularities in the supply of Tatra trucks to the Indian Army.

Army chief General VK Singh has alleged that he was offered Rs.14 crore in bribe to clear a file related to the purchase of the trucks.

The CBI raided Tatra offices in Bangalore and New Delhi on Friday.

Earlier, CBI had reportedly confiscated the passport of Ravi Rishi.
